How would you change Roku's XDS media streamer?

2010 may arguably be the year of the tablet, but darn if media streamers aren't breathing down their neck. This year, we've seen an explosion in the quantity and quality of media streamer options, with even the mighty Google buying in via its Google TV solution. One of the earlier birds, Roku, decided to dole out an updated box just a few months ago, and now it's competing against the Apple TV, a few WD TV Live units, D-Link's Boxee Box and scores of integrated options within HDTVs. At $99, there's an awful lot of choices on the market, but we're curious to know how XDS early adopters would tweak and / or overhaul things if given the golden opportunity. Would you change the exterior at all? How about the user interface? Add any content partners? How's the remote control situation treating you? Think of comments below like you would an AA meeting -- speak your heart and wait for nods. We're all one in this brainstorming bubble.

Google's HTML5 e-book begins to appear in newspapers

In yesterday's copy of the Los Angeles Times, a print version of Google's new 20 Things e-book has been found. The clipping relates to the Cloud Computing chapter of the book, but the chapter number doesn't match up.

This is an obvious, and genius step for Google. Not only are they capitalizing on the book's great illustrations, but they're also dragging the untechnological masses kicking and screaming into the HTML5 future. The reader sees the print advertisement, loads up the website... and sees an e-book that looks just like a real book!

Less obvious, but more impressive, is the fact that Google isn't pushing Chrome as the only choice of modern browser. The 'What Browser?' site that the e-book points to features a Windowsesque 'Browser Ballot', with Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari and Opera all being shuffled randomly.

It looks as if Google might be taking a leaf from Microsoft's Beauty of the Web book. Looking at the bigger picture, an up-to-date Web is infinitely more powerful and interesting than a crusty and antiquated Web. Everyone stands to gain from an HTML5-enabled Web, including Google.

ComScore: Android keeps chugging, BlackBerry falters, world awaits Windows Phone 7's numbers

Compared to last month's report, it's more or less business as usual in ComScore's latest smartphone market share numbers for the three-month period ending in October, but there are a few interesting points worth calling out. Most notably, RIM's decline seems to have accelerated -- they've lost a claimed 3.5 percent of the US market in the latest period compared to 2.8 percent prior, which means they're now down to 35.8 percent. Of course, that's still more than enough to keep them comfortably in first place, but it's a situation they're going to want to reverse sooner or later -- hopefully with TAT's help. Meanwhile, Apple's tacked on a slightly larger slice of the pie, but they're still holding fairly steady; Google, meanwhile, continues its stratospheric rise, tacking on another 2.1 percent since last month's numbers to hit 23.5 percent -- nipping on Apple's heels, we'd say. The most intriguing story, though, would have to be Microsoft: they're lower than before at just 9.7 percent of the market, but these figures don't include Windows Phone 7 yet -- and clearly, no one's buying WinMo 6.5 gear at this point. Should start to get interesting in the next month or two on that front.

wunderlist is a cross-platform free to-do list manager

wunderlist is a minimalistic, pretty to-do list manager. Here's a quick rundown of what it can and can't do:

Pros:

• Looks: It looks quite pretty. You can change the background, and it's generally just lovely.
• Simplicity: That can also be considered a bad thing, I guess, but wunderlist is very simple. There are no nested tasks, for example.
• Multiple lists: You can easily create extra lists for different contexts and move items between lists.
• Fast search: Search is "live" and updates as you type. It's very snappy, but I only tested it with a tiny list.
• Quick filtering: There are quick links to see tasks due today, tomorrow, within the next seven days, etc. You can also filter by "starred" tasks.
• Online sync: When you save the file, it's automatically synced to wunderlist's online server. Then you can run wunderlist on another computer and keep working on the same task list. I love this feature.
• Cross-platform: It works with OS X and Windows at this point. The Windows version doesn't feel "native" at all, though - it feels like a Mac app running in a Windows window.

Cons:

• Simplicity: There's no smart text processing. If I tell it "Buy food tomorrow," it doesn't realize "tomorrow" is a deadline. It's the same for "Talk to Josh @work" - it doesn't make a list with "@work" (or add to it if it exists).
• No documentation: I know people never read it, but come on, technical writers have to earn a living somehow! Seriously though, I would expect at least an HTML page (other than the "Features" page, which is marketing).
• No mobile app (yet): An iOS app is coming, but there's no talk of Android yet.
• No global hotkey: And that's the deal-breaker for me; as I've said elsewhere, quickly capturing ideas and to-do items is crucial for me. There is currently no way to bring up wunderlist's window with a hotkey.

Bottom line: It's nice, if you like pretty software, and it shows a great deal of promise for the future (if the "cons" above are addressed).

Last Christmas it was 120 years of National Geographic, and this year it's an equally beautiful but very different vista: 56 years of Playboy on a 250GB hard drive. Google Chrome Canary coming to other OSes?

The Google Chrome Dev channel received an update yesterday, and while its changelog was a lengthy one, most of the changes were stability fixes and interface polish. There was, however, an interesting note on one of the less significant entries.

Revision 67228 removed some un-needed text from the channel changer in Chrome OS -- which lets you choose to listen for updates to the stable, beta, or dev build. The removed text was Canary, which isn't needed since Chrome Canary currently only runs on Windows.

The revision, however, reads "Remove 'canary' as it's not yet supported as of now." Now, this is just a comment in the Chromium code at the moment -- but it could well indicate that Canary is headed to other OSes. What do you say, Mac and Linux users? Would you install Chrome Canary if it was available for your OS?
