Apple v. Samsung Closes Week Two, the Patent Expert Parade
The second week in Apple v. Samsung has centered around the testimonies of expert witnesses on the patents involved in the case. Although the tedious breakdown of each patent could be considered dry, there are still interesting tidbits of information being revealed both in court, and in unsealed document filings.

Help Bob make money in Sticks, a fun physics game
Then, on his way back home from another grueling day at the office, he passes a huge sign which says "Sticks." This is where the game starts.
Each level has a number of coins hovering in mid-air, and your goal is to place sticks that lead those coins to Bob -- but you only have a limited amount of wood to play with. As soon as you're done placing your sticks strategically, hit the big Play button and let nature, or rather gravity, run its course. The coins will drop down, and if you place your sticks correctly, they will roll all the way to Bob.
The soundtrack is soothing and playful, and didn't get on my nerves even after playing for quite a while. All in all, a very cute game, especially for a day at the office.

How to delete old backups and other ways to free up space in iCloud
iCloud automagically backs up all of the data on your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. So, if you ever lose, replace, update, or simply restore your device, you can easily get back to right where you left off. Unfortunately, iCloud backup is so automagical that it can quickly fill up the 5GB Apple gives you for free, preventing future backups or forcing you to buy additional -- non free - storage.
Sure, you can go through and delete iCloud emails with hefty attachments, or be frugal about just how many -- and how large --documents you keep in the cloud, but you can also control just exactly what gets backed up, removing anything that's not urgent or important to you, and you can also manually delete old backups from devices you no longer have, or you simply don't need anymore. And that can instantly free up considerable, valuable space for the stuff you do care about.
How to delete an iCloud backup
Old backups, especially if they're for devices you've since lost, given away, sold, upgraded, or otherwise don't have anymore, can be a huge waste of your iCloud space. Likewise, even backups of the devices you do use, if they're several months old, might not be worth keeping around any more. Since all the iPhones, iPods, and iPads you've ever connected to your iCloud account share the same 5GB storage pool, cleaning out what you no longer need can give you back a lot of breathing room. It's easy to do, if tricky to find.
- Launch the Settings app
- Tap on iCloud
- Tap on Storage and Backup
- Tap on Manage Storage
- Check out your current backups stored on iCloud. (Here you can see two iPhones, including one replaced at the Apple Store last week and so no longer needed).
- Tap on the backup you want to remove from iCloud
- Tap on Delete Backup
- Tap on Turn Off and Delete
That?s it, that backup has now been removed and your iCloud account should show a nicer, healthier balance.
How to manually manage what gets backed up to iCloud
Once you've deleted all the old backups you don't need any more, the next thing to check is what's being backed up now, and whether or not all of it needs to be backed up. For example, backing up the Camera Roll can use up a large amount of your iCloud storage. Since Photo Stream captures all the photo data anyway, and isn't counted against your total storage usage, turning off Camera Roll backup can save you considerable space. You will LOSE backups of videos, but those same videos can chew through your free iCloud data allotment anyway. Again, it's easy to see and control what gets backed up to iCloud, once you know where to look.
- Launch the Settings app
- Tap iCloud near the bottom
- Tap Storage and Backup near the bottom
- Tap Manage Storage
- If you have multiple devices on the same iCloud account, tap on the name of your device
- You'll see a list of apps currently being backed up to iCloud. Not all apps will be shown immediately. Too see them all, tap Show All
- For any apps you don't really want or need to be backed up, switch the toggle button to Off
The Camera Roll above is 35GB. That could cost you quite a bit in iCloud storage fees. Turning it off, you save a ton of space. Just remember, while Photo Stream will keep your still photos safe, your videos won't get backed up so you'll have to take care of those yourself.
How to downgrade your iCloud storage
If you previously bought more iCloud storage space, and now, after having cleaned out your iClouds, you decide you don't any more, you can make sure you don't get billed again next time your payment comes due. iCloud billing is on a yearly cycle, so chance are you'll still get the extra storage you paid for for a while, but you won't get charged again.
- Launch the Settings app
- Tap iCloud near the bottom
- Tap Storage and Backup near the bottom
- Tap Buy More Storage
- Tap Downgrade Options near the bottom
- Login with your Apple ID password
- Choose your new plan from the available options
The downgrade will take effect at your next billing cycle (one year after you bought the additional storage).

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi gets taste of Ice Cream Sandwich in the US
Samsung was widely (if unofficially) expected to upgrade the Galaxy Tab line to Ice Cream Sandwich this summer. Thankfully, that wasn't just wishful thinking on the part of a few fans. Numerous Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi owners in the US have reported receiving an official push to Android 4.0.4 shortly after getting out of bed on Monday. The new TouchWiz, Chrome support and more are all welcome -- just don't anticipate any unique twists from the upgrade. In some respects, we're likely getting a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with a Tegra 2 processor. The only real uncertainties are when the rest of the eligible Galaxy Tab line will make the leap as well as the possibility of Jelly Bean; hopefully, it's not the end of the update road for some of Samsung's earliest tablet adopters in the country.

Samsung drops ICS source code for Note 10.1, Tab 10.1, and Tab 7 plus
Samsung is keeping busy this weekend, as they have released the source-code for the GPL portions of the software for the Galaxy Note 10.1, as well as the Ice Cream Sandwich updates for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 7 plus. We're happy to see source code on time for the Note 10.1, but having the code for an ICS kernel for the Tab 10.1 and Tab 7 plus is even better news for the hacker inside each of us -- having the right kernel source will help folks to build fully functional AOSP-based ROMs.
For most of us, this means sitting back and waiting for the inevitable announcement from the developer(s) of the ROM we're running, so we can download it, flash it, and hope it boots. For the developers though, this means a busy weekend of compilation and experimentation. Be sure to show them a little bit of love when they get things ready to share.

NPD: Xbox 360 ruled a steadily declining video game empire in July
Microsoft must sometimes feel like its lead in the game market is a Pyrrhic victory. The Xbox 360 once again topped the NPD Group's hardware charts in July, claiming a near-majority 49 percent market share of consoles -- but the 203,000 units sold were a steep drop from the 257,000 units that traded hands in June, and a far cry from the glory days that would have given a victory more meaning. Nintendo and Sony haven't shared their own figures, although the analyst group notes that only Nintendo's 3DS and DSi had any kind of increase in the month. The industry as a whole was unmistakably feeling the combined effects of the pre-holiday doldrums and a console generation that's long in the tooth: hardware revenue was down 32 percent in the month to $150.7 million, while the games in question saw revenue dip 23 percent to $260.7 million. If you need a culprit, earlier reports for the second quarter had credited similar shifts to sales of physical game copies declining faster than digital sales could replace them. Hope remains in the usual fall spike; even so, the July figures suggest the big three platforms might be living on borrowed time.

Appellate Court Reversal Less About Wiretapping, More About Government Immunity
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday overturned a ruling by a lower court judge who had awarded $40,800 in damages and $2.5 million in attorney fees to the now-defunct Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation. This is the latest chapter in what has been a five-year challenge to the Bush administration's Terrorist Surveillance Program.
