Surfy for Windows Phone 7 is a free, tabbed Web browser

surfy tabbed browser windows phone 7While you wait patiently for Microsoft to deliver Internet Explorer Mobile 9 to your Windows Phone 7 device, you may find yourself wanting for a slightly more feature-filled browser that you can use right now. Surfy is a nice option that's worth checking out, introducing several features you won't find in the stock WP7 browser.

Surfy offers tabbed browsing, a fullscreen mode, and orientation locking so that you don't unexpectedly switch from landscape to portrait viewing. Its address bar provides suggestions as you type, and autocomplete is supported for text input fields.

There's also detailed in-app help provided, and Surfy's developer is keen on adding new user-suggested features -- you can pitch your ideas using the app's feedback system.

Surfy is available for free from the Zune Marketplace.

Hercules re-invents the netbook again, launches 10-inch Linux- and A8-powered eCAFE
It's perhaps a little too early to be feeling all retro-nostalgic for the netbook, with much of the industry moving on up to your notbooks and your tablets and such, so we'll just say that Hercules is still kickin' it old school by launching its eCAFE netbooks. There are two models, the Slim HD and EX HD, the former tipping the scales at 1.9lbs and measuring only .8-inches thick, while the EX model is a bit heftier at 2.5lbs and 1.1-inches, managing 13 hours of "real use" battery life. Both are said to smoothly play 720p video on their 10-inch, 1024 x 600 displays or export it over HDMI, running a custom flavor of Linux and powered by an ARM Cortex-A8 processor. Hercules says this "sets a new standard" in netbooks, but 8 or 16GB of flash storage and 512MB of RAM sounds all too familiar to us, and if that cramped, recessed keyboard is the future we're quite happy to stick in the present, thanks.

WordPress enables new iPad-optimized layout for its 18 million blogs

WordPress iPad themeWordPress has just announced the introduction of a 'pure HTML5' iPad-optimized theme. It has been automatically activated for all 18 million WordPress.com blogs, and self-hosted WordPress.org users can download and install the plug-in manually.

The iPad-optimized layout, which was developed with tablet publishing specialist OnSwipe, supports touch interactions, swiping, rotation and 'many other features of the iPad,' all with the power of HTML5. The theme is highly configurable, too. You can change the font typeface, choose from nine different 'skins' to match your existing blog theme, and you can set a 'cover' image. Of course, if you want visitors to simply see your normal blog theme, you can just disable the new iPad plug-in.

WordPress, which claims that it powers over 10% of the Web, says that it currently serves 750,000 pages views a day to iPad users -- a number that will surely explode over the next few years. What we're seeing here, first with Flickr last week, and now with the WordPress juggernaut firmly embracing tablet computing, is a resounding acknowledgment of a post-PC world. It's a very good sign of things to come, too; we expect there'll be a lot of tablet-optimized websites in 2011.

Phil talks tablets, Nook Color hackery, on Denver's KWGN-TV

 Phil-talks-nook-color

Our very own Phil Nickinson has been quite a busy man, pumping out news, heading down to CTIA to bring us all the coverage, talking tablets with our sister sites, and now hitting TV. As we all know, the Nook Color is a pretty amazing little e-reader turned tablet, and a local TV station out of Denver took to making it a known fact.

“They want to see what people can do with their products. They don't mind a little bit of hackery,” Phil said

Phil is joined by Tim Stevens of Engadget to talk about the Nook Color, and how it is the most affordable Android tablet on the market currently. Check out the video after the break, and hit up our Nook Color forums for all the instructions. [KWGN]

Lasers let deaf ears pick up what the sonic world is putting down

Not going to front: we've a soft spot in our heart for focused beams of light. We've seen 'em rid the world of its space junk and set the pace of human hearts, and now, they're taking a leading role in aural advancement. As improbable as it sounds, a research team from the University of Utah led by Richard Rabbitt has found that lasers may be able to give deaf people the ability to hear. Using a low-power infrared diode -- similar to those in laser-pointers tormenting cats the world over -- Professor Rabbitt found that exposing oyster toadfish hair cells (analogous to the cells found in humans' inner ears) to infrared light caused them to release neurotransmitters and activate adjacent neurons. This could lead to laser-based ear implants able to stimulate focused areas of cells with thousands of sound wavelengths, as opposed to today's electrode implants whose electrical current spreads through human tissue and limits the deliverable sonic range. Smaller, more efficient power supplies and light sources are needed before optical hearing aids become a reality, but if these newfangled lasers ever get their act together, we should be able to hear version two (and three) coming down the pike.

Elephant Quest is an addictive, deep platformer

elephantquest
When someone tells me about a "platformer", my first thought is that it's probably a simple game that mainly revolves around running and jumping around, with a minimal plot. [Play a Zelda game! -Ed]

Elephant Quest is one platformer that managed to prove me completely wrong. Yes, you do run and jump around, and you also shoot at stuff. But the game has much, much more going for it.

Basically, as you run, jump and shoot, you gain experience points and level up. Hitting Space brings you into an interface where you can convert your experience points into Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Dexterity points. Once you've "specialized" your points, you then get to pick what exact skills you'd like to enhance in each field. For example, you could use your dexterity to enhance your weapons or increase your swiftness.

The game is played in a huge maze; you go through rooms using doors, and there's a large map. As the name implies, there are quests you can take, too. For example, one quest had me searching all over the place for ten balloons.

The bottom line is that this is a surprisingly deep game that just might ensnare you for a good bit longer than you intended to play. Beware!

Something Is Technically Wrong With Twitter

Hey Erick, I have a question for Jack Dorsey. What's up with Twitter? As I'm sure you've noticed, Twitter is down (for some users), so in true TechCrunch tradition we need to celebrate the downtime with a post. Sorry, did we say downtime?

Dodge is a space-shooter in which you have no weapons

dodge
Space-shooters are usually a fairly fiery affair, with many types of guns, weapon upgrades, power-ups and more. Dodge does away with all of that, while keeping the very essence of a space shooter: Dark background, fast action, and stuff blowing up all over the place.

Your vector-looking spacecraft is the fastest thing on the screen, most of the time. And as the header implies, you have absolutely no weapons; you can't get any, either. All you have is agility and maneuverability.

Your opponents shoot heat-seeking missiles at you; the missiles lock on and start tracking you. The trick is to dodge the missiles while putting them in the path of one of your enemies, thus letting them have a taste of their own medicine.

There are three types of enemies, at least in the first few levels: "simple" spaceships which fire slow projectiles, "tanks" which seem to be more serious and take more hits to destroy, and "circles." The circles simply explode, spewing twenty or thirty very fast projectiles. This sounds dangerous, but is actually great once you learn to use them; they are very destructive for tanks, and can even blow up other circles.

The soundtrack is very techno, but it meshes very well with this type of game. Intense fun!

HeLauncher for Android offers 10 different home screen styles including HTC Sense, Motorola Blur

HeLauncher, pick from 10 different home screen stylesPicking an Android launcher is tricky business. Most of them have so many features and config options that it takes a matter of weeks to learn all of their intricacies -- and you can't possibly know which one suits your needs without trying out a few!

HeLauncher, by offering no less than 10 different home screen styles, gives you a simpler way of finding a home screen that suits your style. This isn't to say that HeLauncher emulates the features of Android launchers like ADW or LauncherPro; rather, it makes your phone look like it's running HTC Sense or Motorola Blur (MOTOBLUR).

In terms of actual features, HeLauncher doesn't do much. It offers resizable widgets, which are fairly cool, and drop-icons-on-trash-can-to-uninstall, but that's about it.
